CLIPPING: DENGUE EXPLORATION IN BRAZIL - JOINING THE "HEALTH AND DENGUE CONTROL SURVEILLANCE AGENTS" IN RIO DE JANEIRO

Rio de Janeiro has registered in 2014 one of the lowest number of dengue cases; so far, 5.039 cases have been reported. In 2013 in the same period, Rio de Janeiro reached 178.765 cases. Intensive communication campaigns, surveillance visits to neighborhoods and creative activities have been some of the initiatives implemented by the local health authorities. I had the opportunity to join the “Health and Dengue Control surveillance agents” during their visits to the Rio de Janeiro’s neighborhood of Tijuca, at the northern side of the city.

Rio de Janeiro has one of the most effective dengue surveillance systems in Brazil. Dr. Marcus Vinicius Nunes Ferreira, Environmental and Health Surveillance Coordinator at the City Hall of Rio de Janeiro explained me all the surveillance activities in the city. Due to the geographical conditions of the city – encompasses beaches, forests, lakes and a huge urban area with temperatures that reach 40 degrees in summer and 30 degrees during winter-, they need to be very alert on this topic.
